Feature Friday posts will feature relevant information from a chosen online resource. This month, the database is Footnote.

FootNote.com focuses on providing high-quality digital images of historical documents online. There are a wide variety of collections available on the site, but for this post, I’ll focus on one of their free collections - a virtual recreation of the Vietnam Memorial. It is so amazing - over 6,000 images were taken and stitched together to form a single digital image. You can read more about it here.

Every name on the wall can be selected and users can add comments about the soldiers listed. People listed on the wall can be searched, or you can browse by several categories, including hometown.

Thus, here are some of the soldiers listed on the wall.

From Kinston

Charles Curtis Whitfield (African-American)

Bobby Lee Barber (African-American)

Rocky Pearson O’Ham

John Vernon Berg

Jimmie Lloyd McBynum (African-American)

Daniel H Lawler

Carl Lee Hill Jr

Gary Morgan Pridgen

Johnny Miller (African-American)

Woodrow Wilson Ham Jr

Vernell Henry Miller Jr (African-American)

Sylvester Lewis Brown (African-American)

Dempsey Woodrow Parrott

Curtis Ray McLawhorn (African-American)

Seth Lee West Jr

Rodolph Lee Nunn Jr

From Pink Hill

Alex Ray Houston

To see more information about these soldiers, visit the list @ Footnote and click on each one’s names to see several details about their service - including date of birth, period of enlistment, type of casualty, etc. Some of these surnames I recognize from the time I’ve been working on my tree and individuals from the area. The Nunn surname for example is one that I know from the work on the white Koonce family lineage.

Rodolph Lee Nunn Jr.

I decided to do a little Ancestry searching and found a newspaper article that mentions Maj. Rodolph Nunn Jr. The article was from the April 25, 1964 issue of Stars & Stripes Newspaper and reports on Nunn’s responsibilities as a test pilot in France where he was living with his wife and two kids. At the time he was 34 years old and had 12 1/2 years of service. There are pictures included in the article, but the Ancestry scans are not very clear. The article can be found here if you have an Ancestry subscription. Rodolph Jr. is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. His FindAGrave listing has a lot of information about him. The picture here is from his FindAGrave page.

Miss Meta OUTLAW left Saturday to visit Miss Kittie FOY, at Pollocksville

Miss Sue WILSON and Mr. W.M. TYNDAL went to visit Miss Lula GILBERT Sunday

Miss Effie ALPHIN and Mr. Z.T. BROWN and children, Miss Sadie and Master Zety, went on the excursion to Morehead City Thursday

Mr. and Mrs. Ed RHEM, of Lenoir county, spent Saturday night and Sunday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. WIlliam ARNOLD

Mr. J.F. CARPENTER went to Morehead Saturday night to see his wife and children, who have been recreating there for several days, and brought them back with him Monday

Miss Maude ARNOLD left today, accompanied by Mr. Ralph WEST, to join Miss Rosa DIXON on a visit to Vanceboro. Miss Rosa, accompanied her aunt, Mrs. GATLIN, home last week, which we have just learned.

Watermelons are now more plentiful here. They come up on nealry every freight from Bogue Sound, but they sell high and are by no means as sweet as we usually get from that section, owing, we suppose, to then wet season.

Dr. J.W. DUGUID informs us that while on the way to visit a patient near Lane’s Chapel last Friday he heard something tingling in the air and looking up, saw a buzzard with a bell fastened witha string around its neck. The buzzard alighted on a tree near the road and the doctor and some others whom he met and told of it stopped and took a good look at it. Every time the vulture would pick itself the bell would tingle. Another one, presumably its mate, was flying along with it.

We learn that a young man going down on the excursion Thursday had a message from a friend in Goldsboro for two young ladies of Dover. When the train arrived here he saw two tall pasteboard pictures, representing a woman at the wash tub, standing one on either side of Mr. W.A. WILSON’s store door, which he mistook for the ladies and ran over to deliver the message. We respectfully suggest that the next time that young man passes down this way, he call at Dr. HYATT’s and have his eyes adjusted. Our sight is very dim, but we well know that we could distinguish one of Dover’s living beauties from a Pattie at a wash tub at a longer distance than that.

Mr. J.M. PATRICK DEAD — Mr. J.M. PATRICK died at his home in Institute July 22nd. He was born July 31, 1810, and lacked only a few days of being 88 years old. The burial took place near his residence this afternoon at 4 o’clock, in the presence of a large gathering of sorrowing relatives and friends.

He was perhaps the oldest citizen of the county, and was one of the best known and most highly esteemed. He was noted for his kindly disposition and his unbounded hospitality. He has lived a long and useful life and has gone to his reward beyond.

On the GenealogyBank blog, Tom Kemp outlines his talk to the New York City chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists about the resources of GenealogyBank. I’ve been a subscriber of GenealogyBank for several months now, but probably don’t search in it as much as I could.

Here is a tidbit from the database - The December 11, 1922 edition of the Charlotte Observer that reported on the status of a young girl from Kinston, Josephine Douglas, that had been burned at her parents home. Josephine was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. W. Birch Douglas. The short article reports that she was out of danger and that her clothes had been ignited when matches were struck in a closet.

Josephine was a young child when this happened. From my searching, I’ve learned that Josephine Tysor Douglas was born June 30, 1919 to William Birch Douglas and Annie Aubrey Farmer in Lenoir County, NC [1].

In 1920, the family was in Kinston and consisted of William Sr. (age 38), Annie (age 31) and kids, William C. (age 12), Helen W. (age 9), Annie Elizabeth (age 4), William Birch Jr. (age 5) and Josie Tysor (age 6 months). William’s occupation is in real estate and the Charlotte Observer article mentions that he had frequent business dealings there. William Sr. was born in NC, but his wife was from Virginia. [2]

From the 1930 census, I learn that William & Annie were married around 1906. The family is still in Kinston, and now have more children. Helen is not in the house, but there are William C. (age 23), William B. Jr. (age 15), Annie E. (age 14), Josephine is 10, and now the family is joined by kids Harry M. (age 8 ) and Clyde (age 6). [3]

There are a couple of trees on Ancestry with info on this family - including this one, but they both have Josephine’s middle name as Lezor. Tysor may not be right either given indexing nuances, but t it appears to be the maiden name of William Sr.’s mother. This could be a lead to finding possible descendants to share this newspaper article with. According to one gedcom that contributed to this information, Josephine married a gentleman named David Lloyd Dixon Jr. and had at least two kids. I wonder if they know of this story?

I am sure I will run across this story again if I get to the 1922 issues of the Kinston Free Press.

While indexing the July 22, 1898 issue of the Kinston Free Press I noticed this newspaper ad and it caught my eye. Kleber Denmark is certainly an unusual name, so I was interested in seeing if I could learn more about him.

Some quick searching and about 30 minutes later, I was able to find some information about him and thought I’d put together this bio sketch. Who knows? Maybe one of his descendants will be searching for him.

Kleber Denmark was born in August 1866 to Stephen H. & Susan W. Denmark. In 1870, 32 year old Stephen and his 26 year-old wife are living in Wilmington, New Hanover County, North Carolina with 4 year-old Kleber and 6 year-old George. Stephen is listed as merchant with about $2500 worth of real estate. The family also has a 22 year-old Joseph Denmark living with them - I wonder if this may be a brother of Stephen’s? [1, 2]

In 1880 the family has moved to Goldsboro in Wayne County, North Carolina. Their son George is now 15 and son Kleber is 13. Stephen is still in the merchant business. They have a new boarder now - a 28 year-old teacher named George W. Butler. [3]

In 1900 Kleber is a boarder and residing in the household of James Chadwick of Kinston, Lenoir County, whom is married with kids and has several boarders. It is in this census that I learned he was born in the month of August. Kleber’s occupation reflects that of the newspaper ad; jeweler. [4]

By 1910 Kleber has begun his family. He is still in Kinston, now married to wife Florence. Florence was born around 1879 in North Carolina, but her father, Robert M. Starkey was born in Virginia. Her mother, Martha, was born in North Carolina. Florence’s parents live with her and her husband. At this point, Kleber and Florence have been married 10 years and have five children: [5]

Sherwood - born abt. 1902

George - born abt. 1904

Kleber Jr. - born 7 Aug 1905 [6],

Martha - born abt. 1905

Staugh - born 21 Dec 1909

In 1920 the family is still in Kinston, with kids Sherwood, George, Kleber Jr. & Martha. Florence’s sister Emma lives with them. [7] Staugh is not listed here, but I think he died. There is a listing for him on the Maplewood Cemetery list, that says he died in 1911, but the birth date as transcribed appears to be wrong. It has 1903 when I think it should be 1909.

In 1930 I cannot locate the family, so that remains for another day. But, I did locate a few gedcoms on Ancestry.com with lineage information on Kebler’s ancestors.

From some Google searching, I found some interesting items - including a notice from a nearby newspaper, The Reflector, that his wife, in 1904 took a visit to her parents. From the Kinston Free Press Index, I found two entries with his name mentioned:

In April of 1898, Kleber attended a barbeque hosted by the local Odd Fellows

In July of 1898, Kleber, referred to as “Kleber, the jeweler” spent the evening with a W.A. Wilson

Kleber died July 6, 1935 in Kinston [8] and is buried in Maplewood Cemetery. The cemetery listing of Maplewood Cemetery has more specific information on other family members in case you want to keep on looking! This has been an useful exercise. Now, I know much more about Kebler shoud I run into him again.

Married. Mr. H.E. MOSELEY and Miss Jessie M. HARPER were married this afternoon at 4 o’clock, at the house of the bride’s mother, Mrs. C.W. HARPER, Rev. D.H.
The bride is one of Kinston’s loveliest young ladies. The groom is one of our substantial business men and a most excellent and valuable citizen. The Free Press extends its congratulations and very best wishes.
