Mistaken for a Turkey

From the 19 Dec 1904 issue of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Mistaken for Turkey, Daugherty is Wounded.  Raleigh, N.C., December 18 – (Special.) — John L. Daugherty, a well to do farmer of Lenoir county, was shot by W. E. Street, of Kinston, who mistook him for a wild turkey.  Street and a friend were in a boat hunting docks and saw on the bank of the stream two wild turkeys, which Daughtery had killed and had set up as decoys.  Daugherty was in a blind near by.  He was wearing a dark oat and the Street saw.  Daughtery was yelping for turkeys and this further deceived Street, who fired and the entire load struck Daughterty in the shoulder, neck and head.  There is a chance of his recovery.
